Welcome Back: Finding Your Feet This September

Firstly, everyone at CEWB welcomes the education sector back to school this week. We know that it is near impossible to fully switch off over the summer months.
However, after a long summer, the full return to school can feel both exciting and a little daunting. For SLTs, SENCos, DSLs, and classroom teachers alike, September is a fresh academic year, but also a time when routines can often feel fragile, energy levels fluctuate, and the mental load can feel heavier than ever.
The break has (hopefully) given everyone a chance to step back, breathe, and recharge. But that same holiday can leave everyone feeling a little out of sync. Students may be returning to school full of excitement or feeling quietly anxious, while staff may be juggling the excitement of new opportunities with the reality of an extremely busy term ahead. Recognising this equal transition is the first step to a calmer, more productive start.
Instead of rushing to have everything perfect on day one, allow yourself to ease back in. Prioritise connection over content, routines over rigid schedules, and wellbeing (for both staff and students) over immediate results. Check in with colleagues, re-establish familiar structures for students, and take a moment to breathe between tasks. These small steps set a tone that is calm, reassuring, and sustainable for everyone.
Remember that easing in isn’t a sign of weakness but a strategic approach. SLTs can focus on guiding the school through early priorities while being mindful of staff capacity. SENCos and DSLs can gradually reconnect with students and staff who they haven't seen in a while, to ensure support is in place without overloading themselves. Teachers can start with manageable lessons and activities, giving students time to rebuild confidence and engagement… essential to getting the most out of their time in the classroom.
A positive September isn’t built on a perfect start; it’s built on rhythm, routines, relationships, and resilience. By allowing yourself and your students the space to adjust, schools can create an environment where learning, growth, and wellbeing can excel. It is important to take it one day at a time, celebrate small wins, and trust that a steady, measured approach will pay off for the rest of the year.
This September, a calm presence and thoughtful pacing are key. Start calmly, support colleagues and pupils, and keep in mind that a great school year isn't based on sprinting out of the gate on the first day, but from finding your rhythm and moving forward together.
From everyone at CEWB, we’re again looking forward to working in partnership with our schools, supporting them every step of the way and building new relationships.
We wish everyone a successful year ahead.
